Bernard MacLaverty

Bernard MacLaverty ( born September 14, 1942 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish author, among other things, the novels Lamb ( 1980), Cal (1983) and Grace Notes (1997) wrote.

Life

MacLaverty worked at Queen 's University in Belfast as a laboratory technician in the anatomy department, until he quit his job at the age of 28 to study at this same university English literature. After successful completion of his studies, he became a teacher and moved to Scotland, where he worked at various schools in Glasgow and Edinburgh until 1981 to then devote himself exclusively to writing books.

MacLaverty began writing at age 19, his big break was, however, only in 1977 with the collection of short stories Secrets And Other Stories instead. Some of the focal points of his books are love and family relationships, especially the father -son relationship. His own father died when Bernard MacLaverty was 12 years old.

He lived for some time on the Scottish island of Islay; Since 1975 he lives with his wife and four children back in Glasgow.

His books Cal and Lamb were filmed. In addition MacLaverty has also worked as a screenwriter and director was himself of a Scottish BAFTA Award ( Best First Time Director) excellent short film Bye- Child ( 2003).
