The influence of new media on society

Stiegler has occurred more as a critic of modern television. So he takes the position that television simplistic measure the attention of his audience and this urge in an underage consumer position that destroy social structures in his book The Logic of concern. For example, he looks at the increasing violence among young people as a sign that the parents were no longer able to carry sufficient concern for the education of their children. In an attempt to counter this phenomenon with a stricter juvenile justice, he sees a dangerous reversal of roles: the responsibility for the conduct of minors, the parents will actually zukomme transmitted as the young people themselves.

According to Katherine Hayles Stiegler distinguishes between hyper attention, an attention that simultaneously focuses on multiple targets and quickly flip back and herwechselt, and deep attention, the persistent preoccupation with a single subject. Stiegler is of the opinion that hyper attention is favored by excessive television viewing. Especially in children alters the structure of the brain of this irreversible and lead to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The deep attention Stiegler sees the other hand prototypically in reading and writing of books realized.
