Bernard Wagenaar

Bernard Wagenaar ( born July 18, 1894 in Arnhem, † May 19 1971 in York / Maine) was an American violinist and composer of Dutch origin.

Wagenaar studied at the Conservatory of Utrecht violin with Gerard Veerman, piano with Lucie Veerman Bekker and composition with his father Johan Wagenaar. He moved in 1920 to New York and became an American citizen in 1927.

From 1921 to 1923 he was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1925 to 1968 he taught composition at the Juilliard School of Music, where among other things, Ned Rorem, Jacob Druckman, Bernard Herrmann, Robert Ward, Tutti Camarata, Charles Jones, Alan Shulman, Barbara Pentland and James Cohn were among his pupils.

Wagenaar composed, inter alia, four symphonies, two of which were first performed under the direction of Arturo Toscanini, a Sinfonietta, four string quartets, and a song cycle.
