Bernardino of Siena

Bernardine of Siena ( * September 8, 1380 in Massa Marittima, † May 20, 1444 in L' Aquila ) is an Italian saint.

Life

He was born as Bernardino degli Albizzeschi in Massa Marittima. His father was Tollo di Dino di Bando from the Senese degli Albizzeschi family, his mother called Nera di Bindi degli Avveduti. At the age of six, he was an orphan, and remained with his aunt Diana Avveduti in Massa Marittima, who died in 1391. He then moved to his uncle Cristoforo degli Albizzeschi to Siena.

Bernardine went 1400 when a plague in his hometown of Siena raged, earned through selfless nursing in the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala. In 1402 he joined on 8 September ( his birthday ) in the Franciscan Order one. At first he was a member of the Order of Conventual branch, but then switched to the Franciscan reform movement of the Observant. This strict adherence to the ideal of poverty played an important role, which was interpreted less strictly by the Conventual. On September 8, 1403, he resigned from his vow of poverty ( Voto di povertà ) from, again a year later and again on his birthday he became a priest. In the same year he became head of the Convento del Colombaio in Seggiano. In Siena, he often lived in a hermitage on the hill Colle della Capriola on which later the Basilica dell'Osservanza arose. Bernardine then moved with his entourage completely destitute from town to town and lived on the charity of the people. As Vicar General, he was responsible for the implementation and enforcement of strict religious rules in more than 500 monasteries. His sermons were charged under the Popes Martin V and Eugene IV, as well as at the Council of Basel as heretical. These complaints, however, were always rejected. He was the teacher of Johannes Capistrano.

Bernardine died in 1444 and was canonized in 1450. His grave is in accordance with his own desire in his last workplace L' Aquila. In the history of the sermon he is considered one of the most distinguished representatives of the contemporary folk eloquence.
