Bernardo de la Torre

Bernardo de la Torre (also: della Torres) († 1545 ( ?)) Was a Spanish captain of the 16th century in the fleet of Ruy Lopez de Villalobos.

Probably sent from the Philippines Villalobos 1543 the San Juan de la Torres under back to New Spain. Because the prevailing wind conditions were unknown, no one knew anything of the northeast trade winds, so the attempt failed. In this case, however, parts of the Northern Mariana Islands ( Micronesia ) and the Ogasawara Islands were discovered. 1545 he returned to the fleet. 1544 was there Villalobos died, and Íñigo Ortiz de řetěz became his successor. When the San Juan came back, he also took over the ship. He drove to the south, where he discovered parts of New Guinea to the Ninigogruppe ( Melanesia ).
