Bernardo Rossellino

Rosselino Bernardo, Bernardo di Matteo actually Gamberelli (* 1409 in Settignano, † 1464 in Florence ) was an Italian sculptor and architect; and eldest brother of the Italian painter Antonio Rosselino.

Life

Rosselino worked in Florence, where he executed construction and decoration work. His most important sculptural work is the tomb of Leonardo Bruni in the church of Santa Croce ( 1444-50 ), which was for a number of other artists of his time as a model for tombs that are in niches. As an architect, he initially continued to Leon Battista Alberti's project for the Palazzo Rucellai ( 1446-51 ) whose court he designed himself. 1451 Pope Nicholas V appointed him to the papal architect. He built several buildings in Pienza, including the Cathedral of Pienza for Pope Pius II, and also the Palazzo Venezia in Rome ( 1455 ) comes from him.
