Bernardo Sassetti

Bernardo da Costa Sassetti Pais (* June 24, 1970 in Lisbon, † 10 May 2012) was a Portuguese pianist and composer who has worked in the fields of jazz, classical music and film music.

Life

Bernardo Sassetti was the great-grandson of former President Sidónio Pais. He began at the age of nine with a classical piano training, including in the " Academia dos Amadores de Música " before he began a musical career in jazz in 1987. He first worked in local clubs (including in the Hot Clube de Portugal) and performed at festivals with Al Grey, John Stubblefield, Frank Lacy and Andy Sheppard. In the 1990s, he stayed for a while in London and worked with Guy Barker ( Into the Blue, 1995). In 1994 his first album under his own name. From the early 2000s he worked in Lisbon as a composer for film music, as head of a trio with bassist Carlos Barretto and drummer Alexandre Frazão, as well as a soloist and in a duo with pianist Mário Laginha, with whom he the albums " Mário Laginha / Bernardo Sassetti "and" Grândolas " grossed. Most recently, he published his shots at Clean Feed Records and Trem Azul.

Sassetti also worked with Conrad Herwig, the Orquestra Cubana Sierra Maestra, Carlos Martins / Cindy Blackman, Luis Represas, Carlos do Carmo, Perico Sambeat ( " Perico " ), Guillermo McGill and Andy Hamilton. He looked at the 1999 soundtrack The Talented Mr. Ripley as a pianist in Napoli Jazz Septet with and wrote film music for various works of the Portuguese film about José Álvaro Morais for Quaresma or Maria e as outras by José de Sá Caetano.

Sassetti was nominated for the 1995 Mercury Award.

He was married to actress Beatriz Batarda, with whom he had two children.

10 May 2012 Sassetti was killed when he fell from cliffs near the Praia do Guincho ( Cascais at ). It has since been repeatedly reminded of him, around September 2012 in a multi-day series of concerts with the trio Bernardo Sassetti and guests at the Teatro São Luiz.
