Bernardswiller

Bernard Willer ( German Bernhard Weiler, alsatian Willer Batsch ) is a commune in the Bas -Rhin in the Alsace region. It is situated in at the foot of Mont Sainte Odile Obernai Canton on an area of 5.53 km ² and has 1424 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). The neighboring municipalities are Obernai in the north, east and south, Saint- Nabor in the west and Ottrott in the northwest.

The place is located on the Alsace Wine Route.

History

The first mention of the place was 1276. In 1383 the village was the scene of bloody battles, when the inhabitants of the free town of Obernai stormed the castle rock Hagen. Half a century later renounced Hamann of garbage home, successor of Sigmund von Thierstein King of the Castle, on his prerogatives and Bernard Willer became a free city.
