Bernat Martorell

Bernardo Martorell or Bernat Martorell (* around 1410 in Sant Celoni in Barcelona, † 1453 in Barcelona) was a Spanish painter and book illustrator in the early Renaissance.

Life

It is certain that Martorell worked since about 1433 in Barcelona and other Catalan cities. His earliest major work was the altarpiece of Pubolkirche in Girona ( 1437).

From the altarpiece of Saint George fighting the dragon, his major work from the years 1425 to 1437, yet there are five panels. The central image showing the struggle, is located in the Art Institute of Chicago. Four additional panels can be seen in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

His pictures show Flemish influence and meticulousness in the details. They are often decorated with flowers and animals, see the horse of Saint George.
