Bernd Thijs (2007)

Bernd Thijs [ bɛrnt tɛi̯s ] ( born June 28, 1978 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian footballer. The defensive midfielder is currently in the Jupiler Pro League at the KAA Gent under contract.

Professional career

The beginnings (1995-2000)

Bernd Thijs began his footballing career in his hometown waves, which is close to his birthplace Hasselt. There he played for ten years in the youth of the resident Wellense SK, before he moved to the youth department of Standard Liege in 1993. There he came under coach Robert Waseige after two years on his first operations in the first team. This allowed Thijs then already accrued in his debut season fourteen times. In the next season Thijs became under new coach Jos Daerden team regular and played a total of 29 league games in which he scored three goals. But during the summer break dismissed Liege Daerden and it was followed by a relatively chaotic season, worked in a total of three trainers for the club. Among them Thijs had to suffer, who only came to twelve missions throughout the season. Total time Thijs was in Liege quite rough due to constant change of coach and bad finishes in the final table. The only success until his move in the summer of 2000 was the participation in the final of the Belgian Cup in 1999, where the team was defeated by Lierse SK.

KRC Genk (2000-2004)

In 2000 he left Liège and moved to KRC Genk. He reached in his first season with the team under coach Johan Boskamp initially a disappointing eleventh place. This was, however, released shortly before the end of the season and briefly replaced before Sef Vergoossen for the new season took over as coach. Under his performance, the team played a strong season and finished even surprisingly Belgian champion. As a result, the team had qualified for the third qualifying round of the Champions League, in which they defeated Sparta Prague due to the away goals rule. Thus, the team had reached the group stage, where they met, among others, Real Madrid, but was eliminated at the end of the Table. In the league it ran in the two years after winning the championship quite good, but the team could not repeat the success of the 2001/ 02 season. As a coach Vergoossen after the end of the season 2003/ 04 went to the Al- Jazira Club also Thijs left the club and moved to Turkey for Trabzonspor.

Trabzonspor and the time in Mönchengladbach (2004-2007)

The change in Turkey turned out relatively quickly as a wrong decision. Under the direction of Ziya Doğan Thijs came true after all eleven missions but after it was released relatively shortly after the start of the season he was held under the new interim coach Ihsan Derelioğlu no more consideration and also felt claims to be socially isolated strong. So it was that he was still in the winter break 2004 in the Bundesliga moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he received a contract until 2008. There he was in his first six years under coach Dick Advocaat promptly and was a regular player with the foal tenth in the league. In the summer of 2005, the Belgians drew then calculated in a friendly match against his old teammates from Genk a metatarsal fracture to. Due to this injury he had to pause at the beginning of the new season a little longer, but came from the 9th Round repeatedly at short inserts. He was thus operated to the end of the season now and therefore had to stop longer. In the first half of the following season, he then showed strong performances and was for a short time again a regular player at Borussia. However, an injury at the beginning of the season stopped him again and after the descent of the VfL ​​at the end of the season he moved back to his home in Belgium.

Back home (2007 -present)

In Belgium, he signed for KAA Gent. There he came in his first season directly to 22 times, with him even scored a goal. In the next two seasons, he had, however, again struggling with injury. Nevertheless, we succeeded his team always qualify in the years 2008 to 2011 for a European competition, but there left the Belgians usually up early. Last season, they even took part in the Champions League qualification, failed there but at Dynamo Kiev. The subsequent season was less successful then, there Ghent failed the first time since 2008 to qualify for the European Cup. For Thijs, however, the season was still pretty good since he was spared from injury and total to 26 league inserts came.

Belgian national

Thijs came shortly before the 2002 World Cup in his first two international appearances, in which he was substituted in each case in the closing stages. When shortly thereafter discharged WM then appointed him to his former coach from Liege, Robert Waseige, the levy of the Belgian national team. During the World Cup he was not successful to the Belgians and eliminated in the second round against eventual champions Brazil. After the World Cup he came to five other missions in which he could not generate any hits to this day.
