Bernhard Cossmann

Bernhard Cossmann (* May 17, 1822 Dessau, † May 7, 1910 Frankfurt am Main ) was a German cellist and composer.

Life

He first studied under Theodore Mueller. Throughout his life he worked for the Grand Opera in Paris. From 1847 he was a member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and a member of the Quartet of Ferdinand David. With Franz Liszt, whom he had met in Paris to know, he went to Weimar. In 1866 Cossmann was appointed professor of cello at the Moscow Conservatory. Cossmann was not only a soloist and a member of a quartet ( with Edmund Singer, Carl Sturgeon and Johann Waldbrül ), but also a composer. His works include three fantasies, an opera and several solo works for various instruments. In addition, he has many Etudes for Cello set, many of which are still used today.

His fantasies for cello motifs from operas such as Der Freischütz and Euryanthe well known pieces he showed Henry Kiefer, who made many small changes, for example, the Erlkönig.
