Bernhard Joachim Hagen

Bernhard Joachim Hagen, Joachim Bernhard Hagen (* April 1720 in Hamburg ();? † December 9, 1787 in Ansbach ) was a German composer, violinist and lutenist.

Life

Little is known about Hagen's youth, but he grew up in a musical family obviously. His brother Peter Albrecht ( van ) Hagen ( 1714-1777 ) studied with Francesco Geminiani Violin, studied the lute and organ, and was organist in Rotterdam.

Bernhard Joachim Hagen must have been in early youth lute and violin have learned, because he has already been hired in 1737 as assistant to the Bayreuth violin virtuoso and bandmaster Johann Pfeiffer, later officially as a violinist at the court. He held this position at the Bayreuth and since 1769 at Ansbacher court until his death. Adam Falckenhagen and Charles Durant, who had Wilhelmine of Bayreuth also appointed to the Bayreuth court, might have taught him the lute on.

Work and impact

Although Hagen was employed as a violinist at the Bayreuth court, his virtuoso playing the lute as well as his compositions for lute were well known and appreciated. He is regarded as the most important composer for this instrument the post- White, important in any case as his two teachers Falckenhagen and Durant. Farstadt describes his gallant style of the pre-classical period as marked by the rise of sensibility and the beginning of Sturm und Drang period.

Thanks to the commitment of the Margravine Wilhelmine the loud music in the 18th century saw its last flowering until its rediscovery in the 20th century. Instrumentalists of our time as Farstadt and Barto see in Hagen's work a great addition to the lute: The high quality of his lute pieces throw not only questions on the interpretation of that time on, the same time is his style " extroverted and virtuosic, sweet and elegant." To play his works today, presupposes not only a good tool, but also a high degree of technical virtuosity.
