Bernhard Keimer

Bernhard Keimer ( born August 24, 1964 in Ratingen ) is a German physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.

Life

Keimer studied physics from 1983 to 1986 at the Technical University of Munich and from 1986 to 1991 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he in 1991 his Ph.D. obtained. From 1991 to 1992 he was a postdoctoral associate at MIT, and from 1992 to 1999 Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor of Physics at Princeton University. Since 1998 he has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, and since 2000 honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart. He is spokesman for the International Max Planck Research School for Condensed Matter Science and co-director of the Max Planck - University of British Columbia Centre for Quantum material.

Prizes and awards

In 2011, Keimer was awarded by the German Research Foundation awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. In his time at Princeton University, he received Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo.

Research

Keimer's research focuses on collective quantum phenomena (such as the unconventional superconductivity and their interplay with spin, charge and orbital ordering ) in materials with strong electronic correlations and at interfaces of complex materials. His research group is developing new spectroscopic methods (such as high-resolution neutron spectroscopy) in order to elucidate the mechanisms of these phenomena.
