Bernhard M. Jacobsen

Bernhard Martin Jacobsen ( born March 26, 1862 in Tønder, Schleswig, † June 30, 1936 in Rochester, Minnesota ) was an American politician. Between 1931 and 1936 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Bernhard Jacobsen was born in Tønder, which belonged at the time of his birth to Denmark, but shortly thereafter fell to Prussia. He attended the public schools of his native land and emigrated in 1876 with his parents to the United States. The family settled in Clinton ( Iowa). There Jacobsen worked until 1886 in a dry goods store. He then started his own business in the trade. Between 1914 and 1923 he was postmaster in Clinton. Since 1927 he worked in the financial sector.

Politically Jacobsen was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1930, he was elected in the second district of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of the Republican F. Dickinson Letts on March 4, 1931. After two re- elections he could remain until his death on 30 June 1936 at the Congress. At this time there many of the New Deal legislation was passed. In addition, in 1933 both the 20th and the 21st Amendment to the Constitution were adopted. In it, the terms of office of the President and the Congress were revised and repealed the Prohibition law.

At the time of his death, Bernhard Jacobsen had been nominated by his party for the next election. His son William was elected to his direct successors in Congress.
