Bernhard von Gaza

Bernard of Gaza ( born May 6, 1881September 25, 1917 ) was a German rower, who was third in the 1908 Olympics One.

At the Olympic Games 1908, the rowing events on the Thames were held at Henley. The course was so narrow that only two boats could compete against each other. Bernard of Gaza won his first two races against the Hungarian Ernő killer and the Canadian Lou Scholes. In the battle for the finals defeated Gaza Englishman Harry Black Taffe through task after his stretcher had dissolved. The official result only places one counted ( Harry Black Taffe ) and Two (Alexander McCulloch ). The two rowers Bernard of Gaza and the Hungarian Károly Levitzky, which was defeated in the race for the finals are, but out in analogy to boxing in many sources as Olympic bronze medalist.

Bernard of Gaza in 1911 for the second time German champion in 1912 and finished one second behind Kurt Hoffmann from Mainz. The championship in the double sculls was discharged again after an interruption from 1909 to 1912 in 1913. Dr. Bernhard of Gaza was victorious along with Wenzel Joesten. At the European Championships in Ghent Wenzel and Gaza occupied the third place.
