Bernhard von Neher

Karl Josef Bernhard von Neher ( born January 16, 1806 Biberach an der Riss, † 17 January 1886 in Stuttgart ) was a German painter.

Neher received since 1822 his education in Stuttgart through Johann Heinrich Dannecker and Philipp Friedrich von Hetsch, but especially at the Art Academy in Munich by Peter von Cornelius and lingered then four years in Rome, where he among other things, contacts within the Nazarene around Friedrich Overbeck and Philipp Veit used. Here he painted the Raising of the Youth of Nain ( State Gallery Stuttgart). Returned to Munich in 1832, he led there on the Isar Gate, the fresco painting: " entry of Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria after the Battle of Ampfing " from.

In 1836 he was called to Weimar to two rooms of the grand ducal castle to decorate with murals for seals by Friedrich Schiller and Goethe, he worked on a total of 11 years. In 1841 he was appointed director of the Academy of Painting in Leipzig. In 1846 he followed a call to Stuttgart as a professor at the Royal School of Art, 1854, he became its director.

Here he painted the large oil paintings:

  • The crucifixion ( for the Catholic Church Ravensburg ) and the smaller oil paintings:
  • The spring ( in the New Castle in Stuttgart),
  • The sacrifice of Abraham,
  • Christ Blessing the Children,
  • Abraham and the angels as well as some portraits.

But most of all designs employed him to large glass paintings, which he six for the Collegiate Church of Stuttgart, three for the chapel in the Old Palace and one for the Leonhardskirche (Stuttgart), the Greek chapel in the New Castle and St. John's Church, all in Stuttgart, executed.

1852 awarded him the King of Württemberg, the Knight's Cross, First Class of the Order of the Württemberg Crown, with which it was connected to the personal nobility.

The State Gallery in Stuttgart in 1878 acquired the boxes and designs for its frescoes and stained glass windows, which were still available. In 1879 he resigned from the leadership of the School of Art back, died on January 17, 1886 in Stuttgart and was buried in the Prague Cemetery Stuttgart.
