Bernis

Bernis is a municipality with 3194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard in France.

Geography

Bernis is bordered on the northeast by the municipality of Milhaud, to the east and to the west Aubord Uchaud.

Natural environment and agricultural geography

The territory of Bernis includes the natural spatial landscape units Garrigues de Nîmes and the alluvial plain of the Vistrenque, which is drained by the Vistre. Between Bernis and Aubord the vast delta of the Vistre which merges with Vauvert in the Petite Camargue begins. Due to this proximity to Vistre Bernis is periodically ravaged by floods.

Agricultural Geographically Bernis is dominated by viticulture (→ Costières de Nîmes), but others are the first Manades ( Camargue Camargue horse breeding and animal breeding ), which are located in the wetlands of the Vistre. There are also some asparagus.

Human and economic geography

The population development of Bernis is remarkable. The population has almost tripled in the last 30 years, from 929 (1962 ) to 2657 in 1999. Bernis part of the Communauté d' agglomà Nîmes Métropole on. The significant population growth of Bernis is mainly due to the economic rise of Nîmes in the last twenty years.

Attractions

The Romanesque parish church of Saint- André from the 12th and 13th centuries was registered on 31 May 2006 as a monument historique. An earlier church was first mentioned in 1095 in a papal bull. The tower was probably built in the 15th century. Its tip was supplemented in 1854.
