Bershad

Bershad (Ukrainian and Russian Бершадь; Polish Berszad ) is a city in the Vinnytsia Oblast of Ukraine. It is located just 124 km southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Vinnytsia at the river Dochna and is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Bershad.

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1459 and was first in the province Braclaw to Poland, in 1795 it came to the Russian Empire was administratively incorporated into the province of Podolia. It developed a strong Jewish population, but have declined around the turn of the century by emigration to America. During the Second World War the town was occupied by Romanian troops and received the romanized name Berşad. After 1944, she returned to the Soviet Union until 1966 and today's city had only the status of an urban-type settlement.

Since 1991, the city is a part of today's Ukraine.
