The Berste is a left tributary of the River Spree, which flows south-east of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg.

The Berste springs in several spring-fed streams on the northeastern edge of the Lusatian border wall and flows Luckau, crossing north into the Baruth glacial valley and then east abbiegend the Spree north of Lubben to.

In Luckau unite behind the moat two arms of the Berste: the coming of a southwesterly direction Goßmarer flow and the south in the district Weißack the community Heideblick springing actual Berste, which is referred to as Old Beesdau flow. Partly also the Goßmarer flow is referred to as Berste. This arises from the confluence of the mill streams Gehrener Mühlenfließ and Waltersdorfer flow, where there are over a dozen water mills. Their sources are both west of the railway embankment of the Dresden railway at the eastern edge of the nature parks of Lower Landrücken. Another stream of water Goßmarer Fließes is the coal pit, which comes from Born village and receives the waters of the source streams and ditches of the districts or corridors Weißack, Trebbinchen, Born village, green forest and partly from Mitre and Walter village.

The southern source stream flows from the heights of Niederlausitzer country coming back the first district of Born village of the municipality Heideblick. Further south is the area of the nearby Bornsdorfer ponds, crosses to then in a northeasterly direction to reach the depths of the reserve Borcheltsbusch, known as the resting place for cranes. After that, now diked Berste flows north to Luckau where they behind moat receives, drive round the suburbs Calauer the water of Goßmarer Fließes. From Luckau the Berste is strong drain acts to the mouth of the River Spree, because of the risk of flooding and partly swampy terrain and regulated.
