Bert Bolin

Bert Bolin John Rickard ( pronunciation: [ ˌ ː bæʈ bʊli ː n], born March 15, 1925 in Nyköping, † December 30, 2007 in Danderyd near Stockholm ) was a Swedish meteorologist and climatologist.

Life and work

Bolin completed his studies in meteorology at Stockholm University in 1956 with a thesis. From 1961 to 1990 he was a professor at the same university. He distinguished himself in the fields of chemical and dynamic meteorology, examined the early effects of greenhouse gases, mainly of carbon dioxide, to the atmosphere and was earlier than " Nestor of climate research " in his home country.

1988 Bolin was one of the founders of the IPCC of the United Nations and served 1988-1997 as its first chairman. Al Gore, the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 shared with the IPCC, said Bolin had contributed much to the understanding of the growing threat of climate change.

Awards

For his work Bolin has received several awards. He received the 1984 Carl -Gustaf Rossby Research Medal and the 1988 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. In 1995, the Japanese Blue Planet Prize he was awarded, the world's most important award for achievement in the environmental sciences.
