Bert grew grave robbers in Seegrehna on at Wittenberg. First, he played football and was then lured by his older brother Ralf, in the meantime also a professional cyclist for cycling. In 1986 he started at the BSG Chemie Piesteritz with the cycling training. In 1989 he moved to SC DHfK Leipzig.
In 1997 he became a professional cycling team in the Agro -Adler Brandenburg. In 1999 he moved to Team Cologne and 2001 Phonak Cycling Team. In the years 2007 to 2011, he ran for the German team T-Mobile, or its successor U.S. Team High Road.
