Bertram C. Granger

Bertram Cecil Granger (born 31 March 1892 in Rawlins, Wyoming, † October 28, 1967 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American artist, art director and production designer, who was nominated twice for an Academy Award for Best Production Design.

Life

Granger began his career as a set designer in the film industry in Hollywood in 1935 when directed by Elliott Nugent Comedy College Scandal with Arline Judge, Kent Taylor and Wendy Barrie in the lead roles. In the following years he worked until 1962 at the scenic features of seventy other films.

At the Academy Awards in 1944 Granger was nominated two times for the Academy Award for Best Production Design: On the one hand, together with Hans Dreier and Haldane Douglas for the production design in the color film For Whom the Bell Tolls ( For Whom the Bell Tolls, 1943). In this adaptation of the novel by Ernest Hemingway, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and Katina Paxinou were visible under the direction of Sam Wood in the lead roles. On the other hand with Hans Dreier and Ernst swept the scene image in the black and white film Five Graves to Cairo ( Five Graves to Cairo, 1943), a war film directed by Billy Wilder with Franchot Tone, Anne Baxter and Erich von Stroheim.
