Beryllium is a chemical compound consisting of the elements beryllium and hydrogen. It has the molecular formula BeH2 and belongs to the group of hydrides.
Representation
The representation of the elements beryllium from beryllium and hydrogen, is not possible. Suitably, the extraction of a metal- organic beryllium compound and a hydride such as lithium aluminum hydride ( LiAlH4 ) or diborane. The reaction is carried out in diethyl ether, as the product is not soluble beryllium in ether and precipitates from the solution.
Also possible that display of beryllium by thermolysis of bis ( tert-butyl) is beryllium at 210 ° C:
Properties
Beryllium is a solid, white, non -volatility, high polymeric substance which disintegrates into its elements 205-250 ° C. It is moisture-and air-sensitive and insoluble in most organic solvents. In water it decomposes to form beryllium hydroxide.
Beryllium forms a chain-like polymer in which each beryllium nucleus is surrounded tetrahedrally by four hydrogens. It forms a similar structure with covalent three-center bonds such as aluminum.
Use
Beryllium is used as rocket fuel and as a moderator in nuclear reactors.
