Beryslav

Beryslaw (Ukrainian Берислав; Russian Berislav ) is a city in the southern Ukrainian Kherson on the right bank of the Dnieper River in 75 km to Oblastzentrum Kherson. It is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons and has 13,000 inhabitants ( 2013).

History

The place dates back to a fortified settlement customs, which had been built at the beginning of the 15th century at the same location. This was named after the Grand Duke Witold ( Russian Name: Wytowtowa Mytnyca (Russian: Витовтова Мытница ) ). In 1475 the town was occupied by the Turks, who renamed him in Kizi - Kermen and there built a fortress. In 1695 the city was conquered by Russia, in 1784 received its current name and the settlement was elevated in 1938 to the status of a city.
