Besboro Island

Besboro Iceland is an uninhabited island in the Bering Sea, which lies in the Nortonsund belonging to Alaska. The rugged island is located about 18 km from the mainland and 61 km from Christmas Mountain ( Nulato Hills ) away.

Besboro is 3 km long and reaches its highest point at 248 meters. Administratively, the island belongs to the Nome Census Area. The island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

The island was sighted for the first time on 12 September 1778 by James Cook and recorded by him as " Besborough Iceland " in the charts.
