Bessas

Bessas is a commune with 197 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Ardèche. The inhabitants are called Bessassois and Bessassoises.

Geography

Bessas is located about 12 kilometers west of the valley of the Ardèche, on a small hill that overlooks the typical Mediterranean heathland. The municipality is located in the far south of the département, in the Bas Vivarais, the alluvium of the river Chassezac, halfway between Barjac and Vallon Pont d' Arc. Neighboring municipalities are Barjac and Grospierres.

History

Bessas was one of the most violent scenes of the wars of religion, have been murdered or expelled in the large parts of the population. A majority of the houses also had to be rebuilt.

A special feature of the community was that they did not belong in the 18th century to the possession of a feudal lord or monastery, but the citizens of each year were allowed to choose two consuls.

Other attractions in the municipality of the ancient castle is from the 16th century with its circular corner towers, which has been rebuilt and now serves as an inn. In addition, the site consists of many old houses in the village center, and a church in the classic style with Baroque façade from the 17th century, houses a reredos dating from the early 18th century.
