Besseggen

Bessegen with the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet

Besseggen (or Besseggi ) is a mountain ridge in the Norwegian municipality Lom in the province of Oppland. Besseggen is located in Eastern Jotunheimen, between the lakes Gjende and Bessvatnet. The name " Besseggen " means " Sensengrat ". The highest point is called Veslfjellet and reaches a height of 1743 moh.

The valley is located the approximately 18 km long green lake Gjende ( 984 moh. ). 400 feet above him is the almost black lake Bessvatnet ( 1373 moh. ). Both are only separated by a 50 m wide land formation that " Bandet " means. Starting point of most tourist tours is the village Gjendesheim. From there you can go in the summer with a boat to the lodge Memurubu, from which one has an easy ascent. In winter, the road is difficult and only recommended for sufficiently equipped hikers. Approximately 30,000 people wander in over the ridge Besseggen. The view down to the two lakes is one of the most famous photo opportunities in Norway.

The ridge Besseggen may be the thin line in Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, by which the title character wants to be ridden on a " Bock ".
