History

The town was named after Henry Bessemer. Founded in Bessemer City near the location of the Ormand Sloan- Washington Iron Works. James Ormand was given to the country in 1756 by King George II. He founded a mine and Ormand Hut, the oldest in America. The city was an important center of the cotton and iron industries.
