Bessemer City, North Carolina
Bessemer City is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, USA. The population was 5,119 at the census in 2000. Founded in 1893, is the motto of the city City with a Heart ( city with a heart ).
History
The town was named after Henry Bessemer. Founded in Bessemer City near the location of the Ormand Sloan- Washington Iron Works. James Ormand was given to the country in 1756 by King George II. He founded a mine and Ormand Hut, the oldest in America. The city was an important center of the cotton and iron industries. During the American Revolution, the Ormand hut made cannon balls and cannon for the American side.
