(South Bay) Bessie is the name of a sea monster, said to live in Lake Erie allegedly.

Description

Bessie will be a 10 to 13 meters long, snake -like creature of gray color. Supposedly they should be able to move around in the water and on land.

Sightings

Bessie was first sighted in 1817. Thereafter, it began, inspired by the April Fool's joke of a newspaper in 1912, a wave of intentional misreporting, which lasted into the 1990s,. Apparently even local authorities were involved, with the aim to attract tourists to the area.

1931 two men alleged to have Bessie caught in Sandusky Bay. However, this alleged monster turned out to be fast as a tiger python. It turned out that the snake was a traveling circus, which one of the two men belonged.

Possible explanations

In the area around Sandusky, there were many sturgeons; In the 19th century it was one of the strongholds of American caviar. Since sturgeon over three meters long reach and can be confused because of their primitive appearance with reptiles, many believe in Bessie if it were only around a large sturgeon. 1998 Lake Erie a copy of 2.30 meters in length and 250 pounds live weight was caught.
