Best Boy is an American documentary from the year 1979.

Action

The couple Max and Pearl welfare lives with her son in Philly Queens. Philly is a cheerful and pleasant person with an intellectual disability. The 52 -year-old Philly is lovingly cared for by his parents. But the care is covered by the aging couple with the time difficult especially since Max is frail. The couple has to make to the search for a nursing home for her son. Philly is prepared now to live independently from his parents.

Awards

1980, the film in the category Best Documentary was awarded the Oscar. Other awards were the New York Film Critics Circle Award, the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award and the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. In addition, the film received a nomination for a Flaherty Documentary Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Background

The film had its premiere on September 7, 1979 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The U.S. premiere took place in October at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Ira well is the cousin of Philly well. With his help, Philly was, whose father died during the three years of production, housed in a nursing home. 1997 Ira turned well with the film Best Man a continuation and further documented the life of his cousin in the nursing home.
