Beta Gamma Sigma

Beta Gamma Sigma ( ΒΓΣ ) is an honor society (English honor society ) for graduates and professors of economics. Objective of Beta Gamma Sigma is to encourage academic achievement in the field of economics and recognize almost to the members the observance of the values ​​of Beta Gamma Sigma ( honor, integrity, wisdom and sincerity ) and to promote economic thinking and lifelong learning. Another important area is the support of ethics in business. With about 725,000 members in over 530 groups AACSB - accredited business schools in Beta Gamma Sigma is the largest alumni organization in the economics field.

History

Beta Gamma Sigma was created in 1913 from the merger of the same name in 1907, founded by business students at the University of Wisconsin -Madison students conjunction with the fraternities Delta Kappa Chi (1910 ) at the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign and The Economics Club (1906 ) at the University of California, Berkeley. After these 3 Beta Gamma Sigma - groups emerged, the first further at the University of Pennsylvania ( 1916), Columbia University (1917 ) University of Georgia (1918 ) and the University of Washington ( 1918). From 1933, women were admitted.

Dissemination

Originally founded as a U.S. organization, there are now Beta Gamma Sigma groups in Egypt, Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Israel, Canada, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Peru, Switzerland, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and the UAE. Members of Beta Gamma Sigma living in more than 160 countries worldwide. In addition, there are 27 alumni groups in American cities as well as in Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Switzerland and Spain.

In Germany, Beta Gamma Sigma has been represented since 2004 at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL ). A North German Alumni Chapter is currently under construction.

Membership

As members of each of the best students of economics course ( Top 10% of bachelor's and Top 20 % a Master's program ) are allowed. Membership is for life. New members are accepted as part of an initiation ceremony, during which the new members are sworn to the ideals of the organization.

Beta Gamma Sigma is affiliated member of the Association of College Honor Societies, the Federation of Business Honor Societies and the AACSB.
