Beth Carvalho

Elizabeth Santos Leal de Carvalho, better known as Beth Carvalho, ( born May 5, 1946 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian singer.

Life

Beth is the daughter of João Francisco Leal de Carvalho and Maria Nair Santos Leal de Carvalho and sister of Vânia Santos Leal de Carvalho. In contact with music they came through the family already affected in their childhood. At eight years old she heard the songs of Sílvio Caldas, Elizeth Cardoso de Almeida and Aracy, friends of her father who was a lawyer. Her grandmother played mandolin and guitar, her mother the piano. She danced ballet and learned in their youth guitar in a music school and became a music teacher. She lived in Rio and her father took her regularly to rehearsals and concerts of the samba schools. In the 60s took from all this and from Bossa Nova influenced her singing career start.

After the military coup in 1964, her father got banned from working because of left thought. Beth gave to support her family 40 students guitar lessons. Influenced by her parents Beth Carvalho is an artist who is committed to social, political and cultural projects.

Career

Beth Carvalho began her career with bossa nova songs. The beginning of 1968 she was part of the movement Música nossa (our music), which had been founded by the journalist Armando Henrique and Hugo Bellard. The performances took place at the Teatro Santa Rosa, in Ipanema, where she had the opportunity to one of her songs, O Som eo tempo take on the LP Música nossa.

During this time she took with singer Taiguara on at the production company Emi - Odeon.

In 1965 she recorded her first single on with "Por quem morreu de amor" by Roberto Menescal and Ronaldo Boscoli. In 1966, they had already begun to sing Samba and near to the show A Hora ea Vez do Samba in part, on the side of Nelson Sargento and Noca da Portela.

She has appeared in almost all important festivals and reached the third place in 1968 with " Andança Edmundo Souto, Paulinho Tapajós and Danilo Caymmi, after which she was known throughout the country. Andança was also the title of her first album the following year.

From 1973, she gave out a record every year and regularly had success with titles such as 1,800 Colinas, Saco de feijão, Olho por Olho, Coisinha do Pai, Firme e Forte and Vou Festejar.

Beth Carvalho is known to discover or rediscover samba musician. In 1972, she hired Nelson cavaquinho for recording Folhas Secas and 1975 Cartola for "As Rosas Não Falam ".

Fundo de Quintal discovered you, Zeca Pagodinho, Almir Guineto, Sombra, Sombrinha, Arlindo Cruz, Luis Carlos da Vila, Jorge Aragão and many others and thus acquired the reputation as " Madrinha do Samba " (Mother of Samba). They also introduced new instruments at the Samba style pagoda as the banjo cavaquinho with tuning, the Tan -Tan or Repique.

In 1979 she married Edson de Souza Barbosa, a football star who had participated in the 1966 World Cup. In 1981 she had a daughter, Luana Carvalho who is an actress and singer today.

Beth Carvalho came into the world on: In Angola, Athens, Berlin, Boston, Buenos Aires, Espinho, Frankfurt, Munich, Johannesburg, Lisbon, Lobito, Luanda, Madrid, Miami, Montevideo, several times at the Festival in Montreux, Nice, New jersey, at Carnegie Hall in New York, Newark, Paris, Punta del Este, San Francisco, Soweto, Varadero, Zurich, Milan, Padua, Toulouse and Vienna.

Beth Carvalho won 6 times the Prêmio Sharp, has 17 gold albums, nine platinum records and one platinum DVD.

In 1984 she won the inauguration of the Sambódromo with the samba school Unidos do Cabuçu, the prize for the best special group. In 1985, she appeared with the samba school Bohemios de Inhaúma.
