Betong District

Amphoe Betong ( Thai: เบตง ) is the southernmost district ( Amphoe - administrative district ) of Yala Province. The Yala province is located southeast of southern Thailand at the border to Malaysia.

Geography

Adjacent counties and regions are (from north clockwise): Amphoe Than To in Yala Province and Amphoe Chanae in Narathiwat province. To the south lies the state of Perak and west of the state of Kedah in Malaysia.

History

The area of present-day Betong district was originally under the administration of Mueang (City) Raman Monthon in Pattani. In 1868, Betong was a Amphoe named Yarom, 1930 it was changed to Betong.

The name Betong is a Thai adaptation of " Betung ", the original Malay name. Adoration means bamboo.

Attractions

  • Bala - Hala Forest: a lush rainforest on the border to Narathiwat with many rare plant and bird species; live here also members of the nomadic Semang ( Sakai )
  • Hot springs Betong: in Tambon Tano Maero, 5 km outside Betong; Here eggs can be hard cooked in seven minutes at the hottest point
  • Waterfall Chaloem Phra Kiat Ro Kao: in Tambon Aiyoeweng, about 30 & m high waterfall surrounded by lush rainforest
  • Waterfall Inthason: about 15 km from Betong & removed with pool for swimming and relaxing

Management

Amphoe Betong is divided into five subdistricts ( tambon), which continued in 27 village communities ( Muban ) are divided.

Betong ( Thai: เทศบาล เมือง เบตง ) is also the name of a city ( Mueang thesaban ) in the district, it consists of the whole Tambon Betong.

There are also four " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
