Betsy Jolas

Betsy Jolas (* August 5, 1926 in Paris ) is a French composer.

The daughter of Maria Jolas translator and writer and journalist Eugene Jolas was the USA in 1940, where she studied composition with Paul Boepple, piano with Helen Schnabel and organ Carl Weinrich. In 1946 she returned to France and completed her training at the Paris Conservatoire Darius Milhaud, Simone Plé - Caussade and Olivier Messiaen.

Jolas received numerous international awards and in 1983 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1985 she was appointed Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres in 1992 elected Personnalité de l' année in France. In 1995 she became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1997 the Chevalier de la Légion d' honneur.

After Jolas had represented from 1971 to 1974 Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory, she was there in 1975 professor of music analysis and 1978 for composition. In addition, she taught, inter alia, at Tanglewood, Yale University, Harvard University and Mills College.
