Bettendorf (Haut-Rhin)

Bettendorf (Alsatian Batterf ) is a commune with 486 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the district Altkirch, for Canton Hirsingue and community association Canton de Hirsingue.

Geography

The municipality is located in Bettendorf Sundgau seven kilometers south-east of Altkirch. The Ill River flows through the municipal area, the center is above the Will Erbaches, just before its confluence with the Ill. The municipal area is characterized by the Illtal and the side valleys of the Will Erbaches and Ruederbaches. In the north of the municipal area is a prominent step in the terrain rises up to 60 meters above the valley floor.

Neighboring communities of Bettendorf are Schwoben and Hausgauen in the northeast, Willer in the east, and Henflingen Grentzingen in the southeast, Ruederbach in the south and Hirsingue to the west and northwest.

History

Between 1139 and 1147 the site was mentioned as a Pray village in documents and belonged to the Peace of Westphalia to the county Pfirt.

The place name comes from the word pray. The coat of arms of the municipality is talking with bible and rosary.

For the year 1302 the first church in Bettendorf is attested, it was dedicated to Saint Martin. In place of this church occurred in 1682, the Église Sainte -Croix ( Holy Cross Church ) which, several renovations in 1841 was finally completely rebuilt.

The school building was built in 1860 and housed initially the Mairie.

Transport links

Through the south bed village the road D department 9b of Hirsingue goes according Werentzhouse that opens up the upper Illtal. In the near Altkirch several nationally important roads meet together. Here is also connected to the rail network ( Paris- Est - Mulhouse- Ville).
