Bettingen

Bettingen is a municipality and adjacent Riehen the only rural community of the small canton of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland.

Betti gene neighboring municipalities are the basel urban Riehen and the Baden-Württemberg Grenzach- Wyhlen and Inzlingen.

History

On March 2, 1513 the city of Basel purchased the village " Betticken " by the brothers Christoffel and Hanns Truchsässen of Wolhusen. The purchase price was 800 guilders. This act of purchase is ultimately the reason why Bettingen now part of the Swiss Confederation.

Population

The population density is 31.8 pers. / Ha. End of 2008, almost a quarter of the population ( 24.3% ) are foreigners.

Community

The community consists of two different settlements: One is the actual village Bettingen, a former Alemannic farm cluster, as will be seen in the typical name ending ' -ingen '. The village lies in a depression between the surrounding heights. On the other hand, there is the remarkable group of houses on the Chrischonahöhe around the former Sanctuary. This settlement dates back to the founding of the Pilgermission in 1840 by Christian Friedrich Spittler.

Already in 1356 the first time a church on St. Chrischona was mentioned, said to have been built on the spot where the legend is buried after the body of Saint Chrischona. 1925, the settlement was extended by the Deaconess Motherhouse and a nursing home; south of it is the built by the civic community Basel 1963-1965 Chrischona Clinic.

The most striking point of Bettingen is standing on the St. Chrischona television tower from Swisscom, which went into operation in 1984. He is with 250 meters the tallest freestanding building in Switzerland and stands on the highest point of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Due to the number 32 bus transport companies, the Basel Bettingen and St. Chrischona is connected to the transport line network of the Tariff Association Northwest Switzerland.
