Betty Smith

Betty Smith ( * December 15, 1896 in Brooklyn, New York, † January 17, 1972 in Shelton, Connecticut, born Elizabeth Lillian Wehner ) was an American writer.

The first and most well-known work of Betty Smith 's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn ) (1943 ), which led not only the American best-seller list, but was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize. 1945 Elia Kazan filmed the book of the same film received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as James Dunn and a Juvenile Award (Youth Oscar, which was presented in movie history only twelve times ) for Peggy Ann Garner. 1951 was a stage version, which was performed on Broadway. In 1947 the book was first published in German language. Other successful novels by Betty Smith are Tomorrow will be better (1947 ), Maggie -Now (1949) and Joy in the Morning (1963).
