Bettye LaVette

Bettye LaVette ( born January 29, 1946 in Muskegon, Michigan as Betty Haskin ) is an American soul singer.

Biography

LaVette grew up in Detroit, where she was discovered by music producer Johnnie Mae Matthews. At the age of 16, she took in 1962 with Matthews My Man - He's A Lovin 'Man up, which was a U.S. hit continue. She was sent with Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King, Barbara Lynn and Otis Redding on tour, then with James Brown.

After further singles LaVette in 1972 on her first album Child of the Seventies, which was not published. Despite great stage successes to her was denied a record success. She performed for several years on Broadway and went with Cab Calloway on musical tour.

In 2000, the career of Bettye LaVette took an unexpected revival, when the French soul collector Gilles Petard brought the original recordings of Child of the Seventies under the title souvenirs on the market. LaVette got a new record deal, and it appeared successful new albums.

Awards

Bettye LaVette in 2004 received a Handy Award in the category "Comeback Blues Album of the Year " for A Woman Like Me 2006, she received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. For her album Thankful N'Thoughtful ( Anti-/PIAS ) she was awarded the Prix Soul 2012, the French Académie du Jazz.

Social Commitment

  • Appearance at the benefit concert "Change Begins Within" the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness - Based Education and World Peace on 4 April 2009 at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, including with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Donovan, Ben Harper, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder and Moby. With the concert revenue, the Foundation wants to give underprivileged children the opportunity to learn Transcendental Meditation.
