Recorded in August 1966 in Los Angeles and in November 1966 in London, the Rolling Stones Between the Buttons away with it one step further by their rhythm and blues roots. Under the impact of recent publications by the Beatles ( Revolver ), The Beach Boys ( Pet Sounds ) and Bob Dylan ( Blonde on Blonde ), who had immensely expanded the boundaries of rock music within a few months, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards believed among Zugzwang, further continue the commenced with Aftermath way. Also show the songs on Between the Buttons the influence of British beat bands like the Kinks, but also for the first time elements of country and folk. The text of Something Happened to Me Yesterday can also imagine that even drugs fascinate and influence the band members.

Brian Jones experimented again with many instruments such as harmonica, trumpet, recorder and banjo. Can clearly hear the influence of producer Andrew Loog Oldham. With songs such as Yesterday's Papers My Obsession and Complicated produced the Phil Spector - worshipers powerful sound walls. It was the last album he produced for the Stones, the next album the Stones themselves were responsible, from the album Beggars Banquet took over Jimmy Miller production.

Similar to the American Aftermath is different from the British version of the album. Both singles are only included on the published on February 11, 1967 American version of Between the Buttons. Back Street Girl and Please Go Home is missing here, these songs can be heard on the half a year later published compilation Flowers. Future albums the Rolling Stones only released in a version.

The cover photo (which is identical in both versions ) comes from the British photographer Gered Mankowitz, who accompanied the rock music scene since the 1960s, and helped to shape its distinctive style, the image of the band early. Currently, he is represented with a permanent exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The picture was taken with a camera lens smeared with Vaseline, see the Stones on the recording bit sleepy and surprised as by the photographer from. The only partially positively regarded by the former criticism LP is now considered one of the better albums of the band, even if Mick Jagger the poplastige Between the Buttons seen in retrospect as a step in the wrong direction. The publication in England reached number 3 in the U.S. and Germany # 2 on the charts.
