Bevatron

Bevatron is the name of the first large synchrotron, a particle accelerator for protons ( See also: Ion radiation).

Ernest Lawrence built the Bevatron in 1954 at the University of Berkeley ( California). The name of the proton accelerator comes from its maximum energy of 6.2 BEV ( billion electron volts ), German ( and international common today ) 6.2 GeV. A variety of heavy elements that do not occur in nature, could be produced by this research facility. In 1955, the antiproton was first detected with the Bevatron, later the Antineutron. It was later combined with the Super Hilac ( a linear accelerator for heavy ions ) for Bevalac and decommissioned in 1993.
