Beveren is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders with 46 752 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). The municipality consists of the villages of Beveren, Melsele, Haasdonk, Vrasene, Kieldrecht, Verrebroek, Kallo and Doel.

History

Today's church was built after the reorganization in 1977, when the remaining districts were incorporated. Since then, she belongs to surface the most extensive communities of Belgium.

Beveren is the oldest political center in Waasland, a region in the northeast of the province of East Flanders. Get the little lock Cortewalle from the 15th century, the Hof ter Saksen from the 18th century.

Economy

In the north of the parish, on the left bank of the Scheldt, a large part of the port of Antwerp, including the Deurganckhafen, Antwerp's largest container terminal, such as the Hamburg Container Terminal Werder is comparable.

In the district of Doel is a nuclear power plant with four reactors, built from 1969 to 1985. Doel itself is to be demolished for an expansion of the port of Antwerp, at this point, a new dock to be built. Be a real battle is therefore flared up among the last inhabitants Doels and the government.

Traffic

Both by rail and by road Beveren is easy to reach. Two stations, Beveren and Melsele along the railway line 59 Ghent -Antwerp Beveren connect with the big cities. There used to be with the station Haasdonk also a third, which has now closed, however. From Antwerp, the Antwerp tram line 3 goes in Melsele to Krijgsbaan.
