Beverino

Beverino is a municipality with 2403 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Liguria. It belongs to the province of La Spezia.

Geography

The place is about 15 km northwest of the provincial capital of La Spezia, about 80 km south-east of the regional capital is Genoa and about 335 km north-west of the Italian capital Rome in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1467 GG

Beverino lies on the River Vara at the confluence of the Graveglia in the Val di Vara, forms part of the Comunità Montana della Bassa Val di Vara Media e and also part of the Natural Park of Monte Marcello Magra.

Among the districts ( Frazione ) include Beverino ( Castello, 215 m, about 50 inhabitants), Bracelli (285 m, about 60 inhabitants), Canevolivo (79 m, about 420 inhabitants), Castiglione Vara (196 m, about 110 inhabitants), Cavanella Vara (90 m, about 140 inhabitants, in the district since 1929, previously belonged to Rocchetta di Vara ), Corvara (319 m, about 50 inhabitants), Madonna di Sanna (64 m, about 70 inhabitants), Oltrevara (73 m, about 50 inhabitants), Padivarma (73 m, about 200 residents, city hall office), Pian di Barca (94 m, about 20 inhabitants ), San Remigio (58 m, about 110 inhabitants), Santa Martina (65 m, about 20 inhabitants), Trezzo (229 m, about 120 inhabitants) and Vetrale (67 m, about 100 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Borghetto di Vara, Calice al Cornoviglio, Follo, Pignone, Riccò del Golfo di Spezia, Rocchetta di Vara and Vernazza.

History

The castle Beverino was first mentioned in writing in 1202. The town of San Cipriano below the castle was built earlier and was ruled by the family of Estensi. Then the Malaspina and the bishops of Luni gained influence in the town, which persisted until the 13th century. From 1247 the site was free commune ( libero comune ) and joined to the Republic of Genoa.
