Beyeler Foundation

The Fondation Beyeler is a Swiss art museum and a foundation based in Riehen, Basel-Stadt.

The Fondation Beyeler is the owner of the art collection of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler, who had gathered the couple for about 50 years and was transferred in 1982 to the foundation. 1989 collection with a focus on classical modern and contemporary art was first shown publicly, in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.

Director was initially Ernst Beyeler himself from 1 April 2003 Christoph Vitali, since January 2008, it is Sam Keller.

Museum building

In 1994, the architect Renzo Piano, the contract to build the collection for a public museum, which was opened on October 18, 1997 in the park of Berower Guts in Riehen near Basel ( Switzerland ). The museum building is distinguished by its successful integration into the surroundings, overlooking orchards in the Langen Erlen, the valley of the meadow. The 127-meter- long building is located on the busy street Basel; against the noise he is shielded by a paneled with porphyry slabs wall.

Collection

The Beyeler Collection, which contains around 250 works of classic modernism and contemporary art, documents the personal views of the gallery - Hildy and Ernst Beyeler on 20th-century art. Among other works by Degas, Cézanne, Monet, Rousseau, van Gogh, Kandinsky, Matisse, Léger, Giacometti, Picasso, Miró, Calder, Klee, Ernst, Mondrian, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Bacon are shown. The Rothko Rooms are a non-US unique presentation of works by the artist. The art works of classical modernism are compared with about 25 objects of tribal art from Africa, Oceania and Alaska.

1999, the large hall in the north of the building was expanded to twelve meters, so since one third of the total of 3800 square meters of exhibition space can be reserved for special exhibitions that complement the permanent collection or enter into a dialogue with her. Special exhibitions are also in the surrounding garden of the museum again and again, which can be accessed without entering the museum. Caused a sensation in the concealment of the trees of the Park by Christo and Jeanne- Claude in November / December 1998. From September 2011 to January 2012 was the presentation of Louise Bourgeois's monumental sculpture Maman in Bern, Zurich, Geneva and at the Fondation Beyeler on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the artist instead. In 2005, the Fondation Beyeler was a partner organization of the renowned sculpture exhibition Blickachsen 5 in Bad Homburg.
