Bezdan

Bezdan ( kyr. Бездан, ungar Bezdán, dt Besdan ) is a settlement in Serbia with 5,263 inhabitants ( 2002 census ). The place belongs administratively to the municipality of Sombor in the northern Serbian autonomous province of Vojvodina. Bezdan one of the older settlements in Vojvodina. The first mention of it was in 1305 as Battyan.

Geography

Bezdan is 6 km from the Croatian, 10 km from the Hungarian border and 18 km from Sombor. It lies on the left bank of the Danube, the plains, at an elevation of 90 m. The place is often referred to as "water development" because it is surrounded by many rivers, especially the Great Backa Canal and its side channels.

Particularly striking are the wooded areas (more than 10 %), which are not characteristic of the settlements in Vojvodina. Bezdan is frequently visited by nature, fishing and hunting enthusiasts.

Demographics

According to the 2002 census were 56.68 % of the population of Hungary, 23.86 % Serbs and Croats 8.05%.
