Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bhimashankar Wildlife Reserve is a protected area in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located in the district of Pune, an area of 131 km ² and is part of the Western Ghats ( Sahyadri Ranges). The reserve was established in 1984. Here are nine original tribal villages. From the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the area was classified in category IV.

Flora

Biological diversity has been obtained by a group of sacred groves has been preserved over generations. These trees act as a gene pool of this area, from where plant seeds were distributed. In Ahupe, a tribal village with a holy grove, an evergreen climbing plant of the species Xantolis tomentosa was found in 1984, whose age is estimated at 800 to 1000 years.

Fauna

The reserve is to preserve the habitat of the Indian giant squirrel in the first place.
