Bhubaneswar ( Oriya: ଭୁବନେଶ୍ବର, Bhubaneśbar ) is the capital of the Indian state of Odisha with approximately 840,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is regarded as " city of temples " because it is home to several hundred Hindu temples that were built since the 8th century.

Bhubaneswar was founded in the 3rd century BC and was the capital of the Kingdom of Kalinga. The city is a center of Shiva worship. There are numerous temples from the 8th to the 15th centuries, including the Mukteshvara temple from the 10th century with beehive- shaped tower superstructure ( rekha - deul ). The largest and most important temple is the Shiva - Lingaraja which the Vishnu - Jagannath tantamount in importance of regional sacred geography in Puri.

In 1991, the population was 410,000 from Bhubaneswar. Then Bhubaneswar experienced a wave of modernization and grew rapidly. Bhubaneswar has the airport Bhubaneswar ( Biju Patnaik Airport, IATA: BBI, ICAO: Pdal ), three universities ( Utkal University, the oldest university, founded in 1943 Odishas, the Utkal University of Culture and the KIIT University) and other educational institutions of regional and case of the Xavier Institute of Management of national importance.

The city is the seat of a Catholic archbishop.
