Biagio Marini

Biagio Marini (* February 3, 1594 in Brescia, baptized February 5, 1594 in Brescia, † November 17, 1663 in Venice ) was an Italian violinist and composer of the Baroque.

Life

Marini is one of the early violin virtuoso and composer. He probably was taught by his uncle Giacinto Bondioli. From 1615 he worked as a violinist under Claudio Monteverdi at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, in 1620 in Brescia. 1621 traces at the court of the Farnese in Parma. For almost 30 years worked in the service of the Duke and the Count Palatine Wolfgang Wilhelm in Neuburg an der Donau. Also stays in Brussels ( 1624) and in Dusseldorf are documented. In Italy, he was then in Milan, where he worked from 1649 and again from 1654 conductor at the S. Maria della Scala, as well as in Venice, where he was in 1652 briefly hired as bass and instrumentalist at St. Mark's Basilica. This position was terminated him because of unauthorized absence in 1653, during which he had been appointed Kapellmeister of the Academia delle Morte in Ferrara. 1654 he returned to Milan, 1655/56 to Vicenza and in 1661 as maestro di camera to the private chapel of the Bishop of Padua. From three marriages Marinis come five children.

Importance

Marini took an important position in the development of early violin and trio sonata. For the first time one finds in his works play technical innovations, he wrote the first double or Tripelgriffe and the bow vibrato. He also becomes the first one in the Scordatura two sonatas Op.8.

He is regarded as earlier virtuoso of his instrument and as one of the first significant composers of instrumental music. The effect Marinis on the Italian music in the 17th century may well be compared with that of Heinrich Schütz on the German music of his time.
