Bibbona

Bibbona is a village with 3178 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Livorno, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The place is located 80 meters above sea level south of the Val di Cecina ( Cecina valley of the river ). The municipality covers an area of 65 km ².

The districts include La California and Bibbona, the neighboring communities are Casale Marittimo ( PI), Castagneto Carducci, Cecina, Guardistallo ( PI), Montecatini Val di Cecina ( PI) and Monteverdi Marittimo (PI).

History

The place in the hills was a very important and protected with strong fortifications place already in the early Middle Ages. From the Etruscan period are numerous tombs and some finds. Most likely, the hill was already populated. Busy is the settlement during the Roman period.

In the early Middle Ages were in the possession of the town and fortress Gherardescas family. This possession ratio was much later by Pope Innocent III. confirmed in the 12th century. After the ownership between the free cities Volterra, Pisa and Florence changed.

Attractions

The village preserved over long distances the existing buildings of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Several churches from the Middle Ages and some mounting hardware and towers can still be seen today. Among other things, the Torre di Bibbona, which was an essential part of the fortifications.

West of Bibbona are the seaside resorts of Forte di Bibbona and Bibbona.
