Bible moralisée

Under Bible moralisée with the cover picture The creation of the world, a type of very gorgeous illuminated manuscripts of the Gothic book painting is understood, in which illustrations of each Bible typologically " moralizing " that is interpretive, images were compared. The type of book the Bible moralisée was built around 1220/30, at the French court. Up to 2700 images were initially ordered for a total of four image pairs eight pairs of medallions. The Bibles moralisées only the front sides of the parchment sheets were described and painted.

Today, a total of 14 manuscripts have received this type. Besides text manuscripts are richly illuminated copies, including the Codex Vindobonensis 2554 the Austrian National Library and the manuscript Ms. Bodl. 270b in Oxford, Bodleian Library.
