Biburg Abbey

The monastery Biburg is a former Benedictine monastery in Biburg in Bavaria in the diocese of Regensburg.

History

Count Henry I of Sittling and his wife Bertha, daughter of Count Eberhard I of Ratzenhofen called the " Blessed Bertha ", handed in distribution of their inheritance to them belonging Biburg castle, which originally was a dowry of Bertha, her two younger sons Konrad and Arbeo. According to the wishes of her mother Bertha Konrad and Arbeo gave their castle Biburg in 1125 the cathedral of Bamberg with the order to build a monastery there. Thus, the " Blessed Bertha " is considered a founder of the monastery. With the construction of the church began already in 1125. In 1133 it was already inaugurated provisional. In 1140 the monastery was so far completed, so that he could be consecrated by the bishops of Regensburg and Heinrich Egilbert of Bamberg in honor of "Our Lady ". Eberhard von Sittling and Biburg, another son of the " Blessed Bertha " subsequently became the first abbot of the monastery Biburg. His older brother Ulrich was appointed bailiff of the convent. That is, originally as a double monastery built as a nunnery both as men's, it burned down in 1278, the convent was not rebuilt. After the fire in 1278 and economic problems Abbot Henry IV had the late 13th century to sell the goods of the monastery. From an economic recovery and a flowering of the monastery from 1400, the monks left in the turmoil of the Reformation the monastery. 1555, the vacant monastery was abolished; the plant came into sovereign administration. 1589 received from Ingolstadt Jesuit buildings. 1781 took over the Order of Malta, the monastery complex. In 1808 the monastery by the secularisation of Bavaria become the property of the Bavarian state. The grave of the " Blessed Bertha " was originally in the donated also by their nearby Sanctuary Allersdorf and was later transferred to the cover plate of the high tomb in the abbey church, in which the " Berta stone " can be seen in the apse of the southern aisle yet.

Structures

The monastery church Biburg counts after it has remained virtually unchanged in its main structural parts since its inauguration in 1140, the most important Romanesque monuments in Old Bavaria. Beginning of the 16th century, the net vault was created in the nave. Since 1785 it is used as the parish church of Biburg. 1885 to 1887 the church was reromanisiert. The 1701 fire renewed monastery buildings were privatized after the dissolution of the Order of Malta. The monastery buildings housed the monastery brewery Biburg, which was closed in 1991. Right now uses the art board Biburg, an art school and academy for artists, some rooms of the monastery. The former monastery, a hotel and was " free school " is used as a permanent branch of the Vocational Training Centre of St. Francis Abensberg ( BBW ).
